Hygiene Expectations for Training at The Jiu Jitsu Company

We prioritize safety, comfort, and respect for all our members. Maintaining proper hygiene—both personal and for your gear—is a fundamental part of creating a positive training environment. Below are our guidelines to ensure the mats remain clean and welcoming for everyone.

Body Hygiene

  1. Free of Contagious Skin Infections

    • Absolutely no contagious skin infections are allowed, whether they are wrapped or otherwise.

    • If you suspect or are diagnosed with a skin condition, seek immediate medical treatment. Prescription-strength medication from a qualified healthcare provider (e.g., urgent care, doctor, or nurse practitioner) is essential for quick recovery and a safe return to training. Over-the-counter treatments may not be effective and can delay proper healing.

  2. Clean and Neutral Scent

    • Come to class with a clean body, free of heavily fragranced products, lotions, or perfumes, as these can irritate your training partners.

    • Avoid wearing makeup that could transfer to your partner's skin or clothing during training.

  3. Trimmed and Filed Nails

    • Fingernails and toenails should be neatly trimmed and filed to avoid sharp edges that could scratch or injure others. Trim nails to the edge of the digit and smooth them with a file.

  4. Hair Secured

    • Long hair should be tied securely to prevent it from falling into your partner's face or mouth. If your partner could get a mouthful of your hair, it’s not tied tightly enough.

    • Avoid bobby pins, clips, or other sharp hair accessories that could poke or injure your partner.

Gear Hygiene

  1. Wash Gear After Every Use

    • All clothing worn during training—including rash guards, spats, gis, belts, and knee sleeves—must be washed after every session.

    • If an item smells clean out of the wash but begins to stink during training, it’s time to retire it. You can try using products like OxiClean or vinegar to prolong its life, but eventually, replacement will be necessary. Look for affordable replacements on platforms like BJJHQ.

  2. Mouthguards

    • Rinse your mouthguard with clean water and consider using antibacterial mouthwash before storing it in its case. Your mouth naturally contains bacteria, and without proper cleaning, your mouthguard can harbor germs that fester until your next session.

  3. Headgear

    • For washable headgear, ensure it is cleaned regularly. If you use hard-shell headgear, wipe it down thoroughly with antibacterial wipes after each use.

  4. Water Bottles

    • Wash your water bottle regularly to avoid bacteria buildup. A clean bottle is essential for hydration and hygiene.

Hygiene in the Gym

  1. Shoes Off the Mat

    • To keep the mats clean, wear shoes off the mat at all times. At The Jiu Jitsu Company, we provide slippers for members to wear when visiting the bathrooms, which are cleaned regularly. Alternatively, you’re welcome to bring your own flip-flops or sandals.

    • Gum should be disposed of in the trash cans with liners only.

    • Take all belongings with you when you leave, and double check you haven't left tape, trash, or any debris on the mats.

    • Should you sustain any bleeding injury, please inform management immediately so we can disinfect the area.

By adhering to these hygiene expectations, we ensure a clean, safe, and respectful environment for everyone at The Jiu Jitsu Company. Thank you for doing your part to maintain the high standards we pride ourselves on. Let’s work together to keep the mats a place of health, growth, and camaraderie!
